Tło Bieszczady

The city of Bieszczady located on the San River in the Sanocko-Turczańskie Mountains. Lesko was inhabited already in prehistoric times and during the period of Roman influence. This is evidenced by archaeological finds dating from the 4th century BC. until the 4th century AD, as well as later medieval discoveries. The settlement in these areas was probably founded in the fourteenth century, the first written mention of it comes from 1436. The first head was Filip, a Sanok burgher, and then Jan Kmita. After the death of Piotr Kmita, in 1553 the city was in the possession of his wife Barbara Kmita née Herburtów, and in 1580 it passed to the Stadnicki family, to Stanisław Stadnicki. During World War II, defensive battles against the advancing Nazi army were fought near Lesko, under the care of the 3rd Mountain Brigade commanded by Colonel Jan Kotowicz, part of the operational group of Brig. Kazimierz Orlik-Łukoski. After the war, a separate municipal commune was established, as well as the seat of the rural communes: Lesko, Hoczew, Wola Michowa and Wołkowyja.
