The museum is located at the Sanok Royal Castle, in the former edifice of the Austrian Odwach. The facility has collected interesting collections in both the early and contemporary art. The Sanok museum is an important point of cultural activity on the tourist map of the Podkarpackie region. Organizes and conducts cultural activities for the benefit of the residents of both Sanok and the entire region. The museum is visited by about 60,000 tourists a year and is the third in Podkarpackie in terms of the number of visitors after the museum in Łańcut and the Sanok open-air museum. Aleksander Rybicki, Adam Fastnacht and Stefan Stefański started the first collection of exhibits in the field for the museum. By the ordinance of the Minister of Culture and Art of June 9, 1950, the Museum of the Sanok Region in Sanok was renamed the Museum in Sanok. Currently, the museum collects over 20 thousand. exhibits. It has separate archaeological, iconographic, historical and conservation departments, as well as the author's gallery of Zdzisław Beksiński located in the southern wing of the Sanok castle, rebuilt in 2010–2011. The museum's most valuable collections include over 200 surviving Carpathian icons from the areas of the historic Sanok region dated from the sixteenth to the twentieth century, a collection of puck pottery and several hundred paintings.
